Canine Liability Policy Now Available

March 15, 2012

According to the American Pet Products Association there are 78.2 million dogs in the U.S., approximately one dog for every 4 people. As the number of dogs in the U.S. increases, so do the costs of dog bite claims. Dog bite claims are on average 48% higher than they were in 2003. It is no wonder that insurance companies are now pursuing strategies to reduce these claims. Most homeowners insurance companies either refrain from selling insurance to households with dogs, people with certain breeds of dogs or exclude the dog bite liability all together. St. James Insurance Group now offers a product that provides a solution for the coverage gap faced by many dog owners in Florida and South Carolina. The Canine Liability program is written on an excess & surplus lines basis though an ‘A’ rated AM Best carrier. Coverage limits of $10,000 - $300,000 are available with premiums as low as $50. All breeds are eligible to be written in the program. Some homeowner insurance companies will approve policies for residences in which a “vicious” breed dog resides as long as the owner maintains coverage through a St. James canine liability policy.
